With the HP iPAQ 614c and 914c

With the HP iPAQ 614c and 914c
Probably the only French I know is "Voulez vous coucher avec moi ce soir?" But I had no problem understanding this:

Le premier le iPAQ 614c devrait avoir les caracteristiques suivantes :
- Windows Mobile 6 Professionnel
- 12 touches + Roue Navigation un peu à la mode iPOD
- Ecran 2.8 pouces d'une resolution de 240x320 (Ecran Tactile)
- Connectivite 3G & WIFI
- GPS Integre
- APN 3 Mega Pixels

Le second le iPAQ 914c devrait quand à lui avoir les caracteristiques suivantes :
- Windows Mobile 6 Professionnel
- Clavier alphanumerique (Look Blackberry)
- Ecran 2.46 pouces d'une resolution de 320x240 (Ecran Tactile)
- Connectivite 3G & WIFI
- GPS Integre
- APN 3 Mega Pixels
....because specs are universal! But if you still need help, here's what smartphonefrance.info was trying to say about the new HP iPAQ 914c and iPAQ 614c (when you reduce the text to its bare essentials):

The new HP iPAQ 614c runs on Windows Mobile 6 Professional (PDA Phone), features a unique touch-driven interface, a 2.8" portrait QVGA display, 3G and WiFi connectivity, integrated GPS, and a 3 megapixel camera.

The new HP iPAQ 914c also runs on WM6 Pro, and also benefits from the same connectivity, GPS, and camera feature set as the 614c. It has a landscape 2.46" touch-display and has a QWERTY thumbboard.

Secure, Portable Storage

Secure, Portable Storage
Let's face it, flash drives are really convenient. However, if your flash drive falls into the wrong hands, so does your data. What's a paranoid geek to do?

Enter the Ironkey, sold by ThinkGeek. In addition to having up to 4gb of storage, it's encrypted on-the-fly with 128bit AES. When you stick the drive into a Windows computer, you have to enter the device password. If you fail the password entry 10 times, the crypto chip becomes permanently inoperative.

The Ironkey is also physically hardened against tampering. The insides of the flash drive are filled with epoxy, making it unlikely that someone could get in without damaging something. Exceeds US government standards for being waterproof. Sweet!

Grin and snap it

Grin and snap it
Face recognition is all the rage these days in digital cameras, but Sony appeared to have taken the technology to the next level with its "smile shutter." The technology is supposed to detect when someone is smiling in a scene and automatically snap a photo of them. When I heard about the feature, I confess I was skeptical. Nevertheless, it tickled my curiosity. While I haven't been able to get my hands on a Sony model, like the DSC-T200, with the feature, Ed Baig over at USA Today has and wrote about it today.

"Smile shutter worked but not perfectly," he scribbles. "To be sure, I captured a lot of handsome smiles. But the camera missed a number of smiles, too, or took a picture when the subject wasn't fully in the frame."

Like many a novelty, smile shutter's luster may tarnish quickly.

"More often than not, I'd recommend exiting the smile shutter scene mode altogether," Baig noted. "That's because whenever the smiley icon appears in the LCD, you won't be able to manually take a picture by pressing the shutter button. I missed out on a few promising family pictures by not changing the scene mode quickly enough."

Talk about new Nikon digcams

Talk about new Nikon digcams
Nikon released a dizzying lode of cameras at the end of the summer-eight new Coolpix models, as well as two new high-powered digital SLRs, the D3 ($5000) and D300 ($1800). If you want to learn more about the technology behind these new offerings, Nikon has posted a pair of podcasts at its Web site in which host Mark Ellwood and photography expert Steve Heiner discuss the new introductions and then dig deep into the workings of Nikon's latest high-priced DSLRs.

A player that knows what you need

A player that knows what you need
Well, it's fall 2007, so the much-anticipated Yamaha BODiBEAT MP3 Player should arrive in limited release any day now. If you're a workout nut or want to become a person who embraces exercise, BODiBEAT is going to blow your socks off (and your wallet out).

Unlike your iPod, BODiBEAT is loaded with workout management features. It analyzes your playlist by beats per minute and then matches songs to the speed of your workout. There are four music modes: "free workout" that matches music to your pace , "fitness" for optimal aerobic exercise, "training" for serious runners, and "music" for chillin' and listening whenever, wherever.

There are a ton of great benefits to this technology. Me? Well, I'm addicted to my iPod, I'm a control freak about my music, I love to exercise, and my very thrifty solution is FitPod's weekly download available via iTunes and at FitPod.com.

Price: $300. Learn more and view the demo at Yamaha.

Game hardware hacks

Yesterday evening I went to an event organised as part of the London Games Festival, called Dorkfest – Console Hacks.

It featured some pretty bonkers homemade games, including a funny Pong controller – made from a modified pair of leather boots and a riding crop – created by the inimitable James Larsson, a regular at London Dorkbot events.

Tim Hunkin, star of the TV show The Secret Life of Machines, also showed videos of the amazing homemade amusement arcade he's built on Southwold Pier in Suffolk. Instead of shoot-em-ups or Dance Dance Revolution, it features a dog walking game (see image above), a machine that simulates a short holiday break and another that sends you on an underwater adventure. You can see more of his incredible arcade inventions here and a short video about the arcade below...

The most conventional presentation was given by Matthew Garrett, who came along to demonstrate the gaming potential of the OLPC, or the $100(-ish) Laptop. Unfortunately Matthew's laptop malfunctioned during his presentation, so we didn't get to see all that much.
Apparently, he's also only developed Connect 4 for the device anyway.

But the games possibilities of the device seem interesting. Since you can automatically interact with users nearby, using the laptop's Mesh Wireless system, it might open up some novel gaming opportunities. Given that the laptop has limited processing and graphics capabilities, perhaps it would be an ideal opportunity to revive some old arcade classics?

Robot bounder

Browsing YouTube for videos tagged 'mechatronic' – as you do – I came across this gem. PAW was developed at McGill University, Canada, and has spring-loaded legs.

It actually has wheels on the end of those springy legs. Skip to 2:45 into this clip and you can see it bound in slow motion, and keep watching after that to see it showing off outdoors with some graceful skating actions. Read more on the page of James Smith who helped build it.

I think it even trumps this graceful 'land swimming' robot I have blogged about before.

I think the bounding gait makes PAW looks happy, or exuberant. Do you agree? That fits in with the idea of making robots behave like dogs so they are easier to relate to, as we covered earlier in the week.

Tom Simonite, online technology reporter

Technology to creep you out

Spooky costumes are all well and good, but if you really want to scare the living daylights out of someone, technology can certainly help. Here's a round-up of stuff that might come in handy this Halloween…

Harness the 'uncanny valley'

One way to give someone the heebie-jeebies could be to send them into the uncanny valley. This phrase defines the unnerving feeling that occurs when something looks and acts much like a human, but quite clearly isn't. It's a phenomenon particularly associated with unnervingly lifelike robots and, looking at this "robotic child" CB2 (below), it's not hard to see why.

CB2's odd skin gives it tactile capabilities, but combined with some disturbingly realistic behaviour, its weird appearance is also enough to give anyone bad dreams.

While less bizarre than CB2, Aactroid – a robot designed to work as an office receptionist – is still realistic enough to give someone the creeps.

Brain imaging experiments carried out by researchers at University College London could help explain why such human-like technologies naturally invoke a feeling of uneasiness in people. Thierry Chaminade and Ayse Saygin at UCL speculate that this reaction may have an evolutionary explanation – helping people to identify individuals who may be carrying an infectious disease. Whatever the explanation, it could be a useful trick for spooking out guests at a Halloween party.

Creepy critters

There are other ways robots can tap into a person's primal fears, by impersonating other things that invoke a sense of dread – insects, snakes and spiders, for example.

The six-legged robot below might have a remarkable ability to climb walls and trees, but its insect-like movement are also likely to trigger feeling of unease.

The wriggling snake-like motion of this underwater robot has a similar effect. And there's something about this mechanical centipede that certainly gives me the creeps.

Another video clip shows a beetle-like robot crawling through a stretch of intestine. It could one day perform life-saving stomach surgery, but it also looks worryingly like something out of a science-fiction movie. Or how about a robot that needs to consume living insects just to keep going. The stuff of nightmares indeed.

Get inside the brain

This is all well and good, but if you really want to terrify someone, perhaps it's best to tap directly into the fear centres in their brain.

Last year, theme-park rides equipped with EEG and heart-rate monitors for each user were installed at Science Museum in London. The idea was to measure sense of excitement and fear felt by those being flung through the air. But equally the information could be used to create the most terrifying roller coaster imaginable.

Computerised optical illusion are another scary way to play with someone's brain. Here are some neat examples of tricks used by Swiss and UK researchers to induce out-of-body experiences in subjects. Computer software might also provide the perfect Halloween costume by changing your skin to something much weirder.

Similarly, information gleaned from experiments with video games could prove useful for working out how best to be scary. Another team of researchers at UCL built a version of Pac-Man that delivers an electric shock when the player gets caught by a ghost. It's an interesting exploration of the way fear affects the brain, but the same information could be used to train a game to scare the pants of its player, by identifying what makes them most afraid and springing surprises when they least expect them.

Once the perfect moment has been chosen, a direct approach would be to deliver a huge magnetic pulse to someone's brain, an approach pioneered, with terrifying results by Michael Persinger, a neuro-scientist at Laurentian University at Sudbury in Ontario, Canada, who used his "god helmet" to investigate into the nature mystical and psychic experiences.

If you want to get more, this paper from Nature describes experiments that involved inducing the disturbing sensation of someone standing nearby by stimulating the left hemisphere of the brain. French, Swiss and US researchers discovered the trick while preparing a patient for treatment for epilepsy, and it resembles experiences reported by numerous psychiatric and neurological patients. Oh, and it's worth noting that research has shown that the dark really does make people people more fearful.

So, based on the evidence above, the ultimate way to terrify someone must be to place them on a particularly scary roller coaster, next to an unnervingly realistic robot, in the dark, while wearing the "god helmet". Of course, I wouldn't recommend actually doing any of that while you're out trick-or-treating, though.
